Hyren was a prosperous land. An island several hundred kilometers south-west of the region of Kanto, it was both a very populous and well-known tourist attraction as it was a trainer's haven, harboring hundreds upon thousands of species of Pokemon that thrived in the various environments that the Island was home to.
In fact, that was one of the most peculiar things about Hyren. This Island, while rather large [being two hundred kilometers from north tip to south and a hundred and seventy from east to west], did not have any dominant weather or ecosystem. In fact, the Island of Hyren was divided into eleven regions based upon ecosystem. The reason it was so popular with Pokemon trainers was that within half an hour you could go from desert to ice age, consequently discovering all sorts of Pokemon.
The Colonization of Hyren Island [ 1000 Years Prior ]
The land was once isolated from the world, within their own nirvana. A very particular race of Pokemon lived on this Island, in fact, a hundred different races. Hyren Island Pokemon were very different; rumors had it that there were types and type combinations that had never been seen before.
However, roughly a thousand years ago, it was discovered by a certain fearsome woman known as Tyra Dove, who had strayed off when surfing on her Gyarados. After days where she was certain she would die, she eventually came across the Island of Hyren, and, convinced that it was God's Salvation, she landed there.
After noticing the Pokemon there, she kept detailed logs and observations on them. Most of these logs, however, have vanished without a trace and only a bit of one remains, describing a Pokemon with "eyes the colour of the rolling sea" and "the wings of an angel".
After a month on the Island, she'd mapped it out completely, yet was afraid to attempt to find Kanto once more, seeing as there were hundreds of miles of open sea that were ahead. Luckily for her, a particular smoke, coming from the northeast, appeared near her. She immediately knew that those were the fumes of the Volcano on Cinnabar Island, and, not wasting another moment, leapt onto her Gyarados and headed back, taking careful note of her route.
Upon reaching Kanto, she spent a month and a half preparing an expedition, where a hundred and fifty people volunteered to go with her. Once more, they were off to the land that she named Hyren after her Gyarados that got her there. The Pokemon had perished unfortunately two weeks after their return for unknown reasons.
Upon reaching Hyren the next day, they all marveled at the sights of the Pokemon that resided there. They had the foresight to bring hundreds of Pokemon from home, so many, if not all species of Kanto Pokemon were brought on that first expedition and countless others were also brought on others.
Soon, word was out and all other regions that had the funds to afford such costly expeditions, notably Hoenn, Sinnoh and Johto voyaged there as well, bringing their own Pokemon Species. However, this was bound to cause a disaster.
Johto was a region that was notorious for being the first region in which the Pokerus, a rather harmless virus that affects only Pokemon was discovered. Certain Pokemon brought from Johto possessed this disease and infected Pokemon from Sinnoh, Kanto and Hoenn... As well as Hyren. The Hyren Pokemon, however, didn't develop any antibodies to this oterwise minor affliction... Rendering it fatal.
They died by the hundreds. It was too late; people considered quarantining the island to avoid infecting anymore Pokemon, but those were the humanitarians. Governments were for the exploitation of resources and colonization of the island, and the loss of Pokemon was a very minor issue to them. In a war of corruption, they ended up remaining there, and Hyren Pokemon continued to die.
Tyra Dove, the once fearsome and valiant explorer and trainer, even pirate to a certain extent, was falling apart. No longer was she strong, she was frail and nervous. She watched the Pokemon die and drop; then, one day, when the last Pokemon breathed its last breath, Tyra Dove vanished without a trace. People say she launched herself into the Volcano at the center of the island, and others say she drowned herself... Whatever the rumour, the general consensus was the same. Tyra Dove was dead.
With no more native Pokemon to Hyren, this island was now theirs. There were borders for a very limited time, and people constantly visited this island before eventually settling; a decent population formed. With all four regions battling desperately for control over exportation and importation, it wasn’t long before a People’s Republic of Hyren was formed, and they separated from all of their mainlands, becoming their own Region entirely.
Thus, Hyren was born.
The Era of Peace [ 700 to 300 years prior ] For four hundred years, Hyren prospered in an era of total peace. Having separated in a pacifist manner from the other regions, relations were still very good and resource exploitation made for amazing revenue for the Island. Pokémon trainers thrived in this world where there were Pokémon absolutely everywhere for them to tame and capture.
But it wasn’t bound to last.
The Cold Years [ 300-250 years prior ] Roughly three hundred years ago, catastrophe after catastrophe lead to an inevitable cataclysm.
The first catastrophe was Twilight Mons, the greatest volcano in the land of Hyren, located precisely in the center of the island, erupted. That not only was a mass casualty that brought upon the deaths of hundreds of people and miles and miles of territorial destruction, but many more incidents followed…
Fault lines were formed and earthquakes devastated the entire region, opening immense craters in the ground, certain people and Pokémon even ending their days in the pits of Hell, falling within them. The earthquakes, in turn, caused Tsunami to form, shattering shoreline metropolises, collapsing them like a house of cards. People began fleeing, and they were lucky if they made it then. For within fifty years, travel from Hyren would forever be halted.
Team Magma and Team Aqua, from Hoenn, had sinned unforgivably. They had incurred the wrath of two Pokémon that controlled weather… Two of the three Pokémon of that type. Kyogre and Groudon temporarily altered Hoenn’s meteorological conditions but their actions had an unexpected effect on a certain other mysterious legend residing near Hyren.
Enraged, the creature of myth summoned all of the demons of nature to feast upon the region of Hyren. Immediately, waves that were dozens of meters tall became frequent in the seas and whirlpools reigned. Hurricanes and typhoons brewed on a daily basis, devastating shorelines.
Pokémon and people alike perished in these disasters; however, an intelligent soul realized that these disasters were only occurring near the shoreline. The thousands of people that survived the disasters moved closer inground, and were safe for a while.
However, earthquakes began brewing anew, and fault lines were quite common. A geologist pointed out that the only place where they would ever be safe would be within the vicious jaws of Twilight Mons, from which fault lines were spread out and hurricanes could never possibly reach due to the amount of land in between them. It was a risky move, but a volcanologist realized that after such a massive eruption, the volcano would most likely remain dormant for a thousand years at least.
And so, the survivors moved towards the vicious volcano at Hyren’s heart.
In the meanwhile, however, all sorts of Pokémon were adapting to the storms, to the point where they were barely fazed by them in the slightest. It is said that some even changed their types to adapt, and Pokémon casualties were truly very minor. Their capability to evolve and adapt is by far the most amazing thing about any Pokémon, would any Pokémon Professor say to you.
Once they reached the Volcano, the huge group of people was shocked and pleasantly surprised to see that the crater was now full of extremely thick layers of ground and stone. Lord knows how they got there, but scientists ran tests and said that the layers filled up the volcano entirely and definitely strong enough to support a city.
While at first their “city” was crude, they were certain that help would arrive soon enough and that this was purely temporary; but soon enough, they realized that due to the fact that the hurricanes and tidal waves kept everyone away, there would be no help any time soon. Their city was built of logs and leaves, there was absolutely nothing modern about it.
Desperate, they continued exploring the crater, and gasped when a subtle hole was discovered at the heart of the plateau. It was hardly noticeable, and so they explored it. The discovery they made then, at the base of a now dormant volcano, a series of ten tunnels. Upon exploring them, they noticed that they lead to ten of the different regions and climates of the island of Hyren. They must’ve been dug by ancient Pokémon years ago…
But this was amazing. With this discovery they could safely access all the parts of Hyren and the resources that came with it. The Twilight Plateau would now thrive.
And thrive it did.
Twilight Rising [ 250-100 years prior ] All of the resources that could be exploited were. Experts that were used to intense climates were sent into the tunnels to retrieve the materials, and did amazing jobs at it too. While the regions were and continued to be absolutely ransacked by the forces of nature, it was a breath of fresh air to be able to have access to all the realms.
With these resources, they were able to erect a very modern city. Within fifty years, skyscrapers loomed and towered over the small communities and suburbs that had also popped up. The Plateau was also advantageous in the sense that it was huge in diameter, ten kilometres, most definitely enough room for the few thousand people inhabiting it. Before long, commercial, financial and industrial districts appeared.
Telephone lines opened between residents of the Twilight Plateau. Life became completely modern in their world, and they lived in bliss.
Temporary bliss, but bliss nonetheless.
The Trainer Clause [ 100-10 years prior ] While everything was fine in their bliss, trainers were sick and tired of having nothing to do. The government that had been established in the region of Hyren strictly prohibited leaving the boundaries of the Plateau due to safety reasons. Basically, leaving the plateau was instant suicide.
Unfortunately, no wild Pokémon called the Plateau home. For trainers, this was a dull life that was not worth leading in the slightest. Certain passionate trainers committed suicide due to the fact that their existence was rendered pointless without being able to train and capture Pokémon. Others defied the law and left anyways, but none returned, claimed as victims from Mother Nature.
Immense stress was put on the government to do something. Fortunately, they did.
They modernized the system of tunnels beneath the ground. Entirely so, and built and created an elaborate system of trains underground that would lead from one area back to the Plateau, allowing for safe travel to the different regions of this Island.
They erected the Weather Tower, in which scientists kept watch on the certain regions, ensuring that they were safe to be traveled to. Upon getting the okay from the Weather Tower, trains would begin operating.
They dubbed the system of trains “The Metro.”
And thus, trainers were able to catch their Pokémon.
The Modern Times [ Present Day ] A rundown of quite exactly what this is like:
The city life is entirely normal. Like New York, it’s just a very large city, and they seem to shun the disasters that are enshrouding them. Many people have forgotten that the rest of the region exists. People work in the city, make their money, and are happy. In fact, it could be compared to a region of its own.
Bringing up the disasters that encompass the rest of the island is completely taboo, and it’s extremely badly seen to bring up the deaths of trainers ten years ago.
The metro is used by trainers only, and people that fetch resources from the different corners of Hyren. Other people ignore it completely.
Rumour has it that there are people creating weather-resistant gyms in different corners of the world, and it’s now a known fact amongst knowledgeable people that certain people have managed to adapt to the intense meteorological conditions, creating small populations in those regions as well, although the government tries their hardest to mask their existence.
And you? How will you play a part in all of this? We’ll have to see.
